New Orleans Saints cut rookie quarterback, sign edge rusher after free agent tryout
As first observed by Locked on Saints host Ross Jackson and later confirmed by the team on Thursday, the New Orleans Saints had a new face at their joint practice session with the Los Angeles Rams: defensive end Jeremiah Martin. The 26-year-old Martin was most recently with the Green Bay Packers before being released, and he was part of a group tryout for the Saints earlier this week. To make room for Martin on the roster in a corresponding move, New Orleans released undrafted rookie quarterback Hunter Dekkers. Dekkers has already been signed, waived, and re-signed again, so he may have a similar role to what J.T. Barrett once held as an on-again off-again reserve QB.
Saints Announce 2nd QB Cut Of Training Camp
The New Orleans Saints' quarterback competition is still going on, although we could have an answer in the near future.
Saints head coach Kellen Moore was asked about the competition itself and noted that the team is getting close to a decision while speaking with Kay Adams on "Up & Adams."
"We're close," Moore said. "We're real close. We'll get there. These guys are doing awesome…It's been really balanced. It's been a really balanced offseason for those guys. I think they have had great moments. They all have lessons to be learned and that's part of being a young quarterback in this league. They've done a nice job. We're excited to let it play out…

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Saints signed free agent defensive end Jeremiah Martin and waived rookie quarterback Hunter Dekkers on Thursday, New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis said.
The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Martin is entering his third NFL season since being signed as an undrafted free agent by Cleveland after the 2023 draft.
He spent last season on practice squads for three teams: the Browns, New York Giants and Green Bay.
Martin played college football for five seasons between 2018 and 2022, three with Texas A&M and two with Washington.
