VJ heroes remembered across Devon and Cornwall

Events to mark 80-years since VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, are being held across Devon and Cornwall.

The day is commemorated on 15 August each year, marking the date in 1945 when Japan surrendered to the Allied forces, ending World War Two.

King Charles has honoured those whose "service and sacrifice" helped to bring an end to the war, vowing that those who fought and died in the Pacific and Far East "shall never be forgotten".

Memorials, flag raising, beacon lighting, wreath laying and bell ringing will take place across the two counties.

Jack Hughieson, from Devon, was captured by the Japanese during the fall of Hong Kong in December 1941 and survived the sinking of a cargo ship called the Lisbon Maru.

‘We never considered ourselves heroes’: VJ Day 80 years on, by the veterans who were there

This year may be the last time many servicemen from the conflict are able to gather in person, making it all the more important

Centenarian Edward Rutherford – Ted to his friends and family – is spending the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, which marked the end of the Second World War, at a street party in his home town of Gateshead. In his mind, though, he will be running through memories of the conflict in the Far East theatre of war, and especially what exactly he was doing there as a 20-year-old on VJ Day, Aug 15 1945.

A gunner in the Royal Navy, he was on board HMS Howe, part of the British Pacific Fleet, when Emperor Hirohito announced the surrender of Japan following the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Ted’s V-class battleship was berthed in Singapore, which had been captured by the Japanese in a calamitous defeat from the British in February 1942. Now he was there to see it liberated.
