Atlantic City fire station gets $1.5M for interior preservation

A century-old Atlantic City fire station will soon have its interior match its exterior thanks to two grants totaling $1.5 million.

The Marvin E. Beatty Jr. Memorial Fire Station was awarded a $750,000 African American Civil Rights Grant to preserve the interior of the 103-year-old Fire Station 2 at the corner of Indiana and Baltic avenues, Mayor Marty Small announced this week. 

This grant is in addition to the $750,000 New Jersey Historic Trust Grant awarded to Atlantic City earlier this year for interior preservation. 

They will fund the restoration of the remaining interior historic finishes, like expanding the kitchen facilities and improving the dormitory areas while upgrading the building's HVAC, electrical services and plumbing.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Fire House No. 2 is more than a century old. To help firefighters in that station continue to do their jobs effectively, it will receive a much-needed interior facelift to complement an ongoing exterior restoration.

“Once again, the Small administration, through Jim Rutala (the city’s grants consultant), is spending other people’s money and doing great things with it,” Mayor Marty Small Sr said Wednesday during a news conference to announce $1.5 million in grant funding for the project.

Of the $1.5 million, $750,000 is coming from the New Jersey Historic Trust, while the other half was provided by the National Park Service’s African American Civil Rights grant.
