New York State Electric and Gas is responding to a motion filed with the Public Service Commission meant to force the utility company to hold public meetings about proposed rate hikes.

NYSEG says it shares people's concerns about affordability and the proposed increase is meant to help make long-term upgrades to the power grid.

The company also says it welcomes public comment on its proposal, which the PSC already indicated it would schedule as a regular part of the rate case.

Binghamton-area Rep. Josh Riley filed that motion in an effort to force a series of public meetings across the state.

Riley calls for local hearing on NYSEG rate hikes

Congressman Josh Riley wants local public hearings on proposed New York State Electric & Gas rate hikes.

Riley, D-NY 19, a formal party in the ongoing NYSEG rate case before the Public Service Commission, has filed a motion demanding a series of public hearings be held across Upstate New York “to give working families a voice in the fight against soaring utility bills,” according to a news release from his office.

“If NYSEG and its multinational owners want to hike rates on Upstate families, then they can show up, look us in the eye, and answer for it,” Riley said. “These hearings are about making sure working people get a say before Wall Street gets another payday.”

Power Prices Prompt Oodles Of Legislation

State Sen. Rob Rolison, R-Poughkeepsie, is pictured speaking on the Senate floor before the end of this year’s legislative session.

Republicans and Democrats in the state Legislature can agree electric prices in New York are too high.

What to do about the issue is the point of contention.

The average price per kilowatt hour of electricity in New York state has increased since 2020 from 17.3 cents per kilowatt hour to 25.67 cents per kilowatt hour in April 2025, the last month the data is available, according to NYSERDA. The average price per kilowatt-hour represents the total bill divided by the kilowatt-hour usage. The total bill is the sum of all items appearing on an electricity bill such as fixed costs, variable rate per kWh, taxes, surcharges, late fees, and even credits for rebates.
