Here's a look at each pick from Day 1 of the 2025 Draft as it unfolds.
1. Nationals: Eli Willits, SS, Fort Cobb-Broxton HS, Fort Cobb, Okla. (Ranked No. 5 by MLB Pipeline)As the clock was ticking on Sunday, there was a lot of buzz that Willits — at 17 the youngest player in history to be drafted first overall — was gaining a lot more traction in Nationalsâ room. The son of former big leaguer Reggie Willits, Eli has a ton of upside, with some scouts thinking he could very well be the best player in this class when we look back at it. He has a high baseball IQ, can stick at shortstop and can go run and get it in center field if need be. The Nats will save considerable money against the $11,075,900 slot value for the top pick. MLB Draft 2025: Nationals select SS Eli Willits first overall, 1 week after firing GM Mike Rizzo
With the first overall pick of the 2025 MLB Draft, the Washington Nationals selected shortstop Eli Willits.
Willits is the rare player to be selected first overall by an interim general manager. The Nationals fired GM Mike Rizzo, as well as manager Dave Martinez, last Sunday and had Mike DeBartolo, previously Rizzo's assistant general manager, take over as interim GM.
Willits, a 17-year-old out of Fort Cobb-Broxton High School in Oklahoma, is the son of former Los Angeles Angels outfielder Reggie Willits. Reggie, who went in the seventh round of the 2003 draft, spent six seasons with the Angels from 2006 to 2011.
It's unclear if the 41-year-old DeBartolo will be the long-term decision-maker for the Nationals â he has certainly spoken as if he expects to be able to steer the franchise's future â but the team gave him control of one of its most important decisions.
