Urgent ground stop issued at JFK Airport due to emergency on inbound aircraft

John F Kennedy International Airport in New York grounded all outbound flights Thursday afternoon due to an emergency on board an incoming flight from Puerto Rico.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the ground stop was issued at 12.30pm ET and lasted until 1.45pm.

No aircraft were allowed to take off from the airport until the ground stop cleared, causing a major backup for travelers.

Officials with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey revealed that the emergency took place on board Frontier Airlines Flight 3546 arriving from San Juan.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24 noted that Flight 3546 signaled a code 7700, which is a general emergency call used when there's a medical problem on board, a mechanical trouble, or something urgent that needs priority help.

JFK ground stop ordered after flight from Puerto Rico reports engine issue

Travelers are bracing for canceled flights and extensive delays after one flight's engine issue prompted a ground stop at John F. Kennedy International Airport Thursday. Bad weather is doing the rest.

The FAA says Frontier Airlines Flight 3546 landed safely at JFK around 12:45 p.m. after the crew reported an engine problem. The nature of the issue wasn't clear, but it comes as bad weather is already affecting flights.

Officials say the Airbus A320 had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Puerto Rico.

All inbound flights were being held at their origin until 1:45 p.m. Meanwhile, low clouds had inbound flights delayed by about three-and-a-half hours — and departures were delayed about an hour for weather, too.

Ground stop issued at JFK Airport in New York due to 'aircraft emergency'

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop of John F Kennedy airport on Thursday after an "aircraft emergency" was reported.

"Frontier Airlines Flight 3546 landed safely at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York around 12:45 p.m. local time Thursday, Oct. 30, after the crew reported an engine issue," The FAA said in a statement.

"The Airbus A320 departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Puerto Rico."  The FAA said they will investigate the incident.

The average delay at JFK is currently 3 hours and 33 minutes, per reports. It is expected to end at 1:45 p.m.

"Inbound aircraft emergency to 13L. Will possible lose runway for arrivals. GDP revision likely after stop," the Air Traffic Control System Command Center said in an advisory.
