Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga steps up by playing ‘decisive basketball’ in first week – The Athletic

PORTLAND, Ore. — Jonathan Kuminga saw his opportunity and went for it.

The 23-year-old Golden State Warriors forward had just crossed the half-court circle Friday night and took three left-handed dribbles before crossing over just above the free-throw line and switching the ball to his right hand. Portland Trail Blazers big man Donovan Clingan met him to try and cut him off, but Kuminga kept powering to the rim. He jumped up toward the rim, just above the restricted area arc, with the ball in his right arm as Clingan jumped up at the same time to try and block his shot.

By slowing things down, Jonathan Kuminga has never looked faster

The fifth year forward has been an overall positive after four games.

The embattled Jonathan Kuminga’s contentious contract negotiations with the Golden State Warriors during the offseason feels like an eternity ago, yet it has informed the current situation at hand. With Steve Kerr opting to start small in order to limit Al Horford’s playing time, Kuminga has been given the opportunity to start at the four next to Draymond Green, with Jimmy Butler at the three. Historically, this trio has not been a productive one for the Warriors, due to the painfully obvious spacing issues it presents. Steph Curry already operates in somewhat of a phone booth on a nightly basis; putting Butler, Green, and Kuminga next to him wouldn’t, in theory, give him enough room to even operate the phone.

Warriors' Steve Kerr reveals where Jonathan Kuminga has improved ‘dramatically'

Jonathan Kuminga looks like a different player to begin his fifth NBA season, earning high praise from Warriors coach Steve Kerr after Golden State's first three games.

Kerr explained how Kuminga's development as a passer has been on full display, while also lauding the young forward's demeanor after a lengthy contract holdout over the summer.

"His passing has improved dramatically. He has made so many good passes, not only in games but also in practices," Kerr told reporters Friday. "I think he's seeing the floor better. I just like the approach, I like the vibe that he's bringing. He's confident. He definitely feels like part of the team and what we're trying to do. After all the contract stuff I just think his teammates have been so good, Jimmy [Butler], Steph [Curry], [Draymond Green] all welcoming him back with open arms and reminding him that contract stuff is contract stuff."
