Jerry Rice's unbreakable records: Why even Justin Jefferson has nearly no shot
Go all access with Justin Jefferson as he offered his perspective and knowledge to top collegiate prospects at the IMG Academy last summer. (3:11)
From the moment he entered the league, Justin Jefferson has hovered near the top of the NFL's historical curve. He is the only player to surpass 3,000 receiving yards in his first two seasons. Then he was the fastest or tied for the fastest to surpass milestones at 4,000, 5,000 and 6,000 yards. And he was the youngest player ever to reach 7,000 yards.
Yet as he continues along a Hall of Fame path, with 529 career receptions for 7,960 yards and 41 touchdowns entering the Minnesota Vikings' game Thursday night at the Los Angeles Chargers (8:15 p.m. Prime Video), he has almost no chance of breaking any of the NFL's career receiving records.
With 40 yards tonight, Justin Jefferson will surpass Julio Jones for fastest to 8,000
Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson will play the 84th game of his NFL career tonight against the Chargers, and in it he is likely to surpass 8,000 career receiving yards. That would make him the fastest player since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to do so.
Former Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones reached 8,000 receiving yards in his 85th career game, which is currently the record for the fastest to reach that milestone. Jefferson has 7,960 receiving yards through 83 career games, so he only needs 40 yards tonight to get to 8,000 faster than Jones did.
Jefferson, whose career average is an NFL-record 95.9 yards per game, is rarely held below 40 yards. He’s failed to reach that number only 13 times in his career.

The 'NFL receiving yards-per-game leaders' quiz
The Minnesota Vikings take on the Los Angeles Chargers on ‘Thursday Night Football,’ and it could be a historic night if Justin Jefferson is able to get 40 receiving yards.
Jefferson is 40 yards short of 8,000 in his career, and if he gets there in his 84th game, he’ll pass Julio Jones for the fastest player to reach that milestone in NFL history. Since Carson Wentz took over under center for the injured J.J. McCarthy in Week 3, Jefferson has posted at least five catches and 75 yards in each game.
While this could be a big night for Jefferson personally, the Week 8 matchup is also a big one for the 3-3 Vikings. Heading into this week the Vikings are in last place in the NFC North, which is the only division in football without a team below .500.
