With Tyreek Hill out, Darren Waller primed for bigger role in Dolphins' offense

Domonique Foxworth says the Dolphins' offense is in a precarious situation after the season-ending injury to star wide receiver Tyreek Hill. (0:51)

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Those watching Monday's game might have been surprised by Miami Dolphins tight end Darren Waller's performance, but that feeling never got past the front doors of the team's facility.

Waller caught two touchdown passes despite playing just 16 snaps in Miami's 27-21 win over the New York Jets. The game marked his first since January 2024. But when asked whether he imagined that sort of debut from Waller, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel blurted out a single word.

Is Darren Waller primed for a big fantasy performance in Week 5?

Yahoo Sports’ Fantasy Football Live crew discuss if Darren Waller is primed to produce for fantasy managers in his matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

That guy's got a lot of size to him, and he put up a big box score in week 4 with a pair of touchdowns in his first game action since coming out of retirement to play for the Miami Dolphins.

So let's take him and put him against some similarly ranked players here for week 5 at the tight end position.

Chris, would you rather start Darren Waller or Mark Andrews without Lamar Jackson?

Now I know Waller only ran 10 routes in week 4, so super small sample size, but we should be able to project a larger workload for Waller now without Tyreek Hill.

Dolphins TE Darren Waller expecting to play more snaps after making two-TD season debut

Darren Waller's return got off to a smashing start, with the tight end scoring two touchdowns in the Miami Dolphins' first win of 2025.

The contests marked Waller's first game since 2023. After retiring in 2024, the athletic tight end made a comeback, but the Dolphins took it slow with the 33-year-old, not pushing him during training camp or early this season.

In Monday's 27-21 win, Waller played just 14 snaps (25%). He caught three of four targets for 27 yards and the two scores. Heading into Week 5, he's ready to up that workload.

"That goes back to the plan that they have for me, and they've done a great job of communicating how they want to build it up and ramp it up more," he said on Wednesday. "I'm grateful that I'll get to throw a few more pitches this week and have it only increase. I'm excited about being out there a little bit more."
