Michigan budget talks: Free school meals, $10k per student, nearly $2B for roads
While the Michigan Constitution required lawmakers and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to adopt a balanced budget by Wednesday, officials instead opted to pass a stopgap spending bill to extend negotiations.
The move kept state government open — temporarily averting a shutdown — as officials said they continued working to finalize the real spending plan “this week.”
Recent action in Lansing suggests the budget could be unveiled today, and votes could soon follow. Here’s what we know so far, with updates below:

Shutdown avoided: Michigan Legislature keeps working on budget bills
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Michigan Legislature technically ran out the clock on Tuesday, when it failed to pass a spending plan before midnight.
But lawmakers in both the state House of Representatives and Senate say it’s no cause for concern; they just need a few extra days to get the budget done right.
“The negotiations are basically done,” said Sen. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing). “We want to make sure the bill drafters have plenty of time, and we wanted to make sure there is no discontinuation of government services.”
The crisis has been averted at the State Capitol, for now, but there is still more work to do.
