Barnwell's NFL quarter-season awards: The top candidates to win MVP, Rookie of the Year, more
Tristan H. Cockcroft explains why he has the Browns' D/ST ranked top five headed into Week 5 vs. the Vikings. (0:52)
We're four weeks into the 2025 NFL season, which can mean only one thing: It's time for my quarter-season NFL awards. (Well, technically my 23.5% season awards in the 17-game era.)
We're still trying to figure out whether most of the league's teams are actually any good, but with most starters having played 150 snaps or more, we can start making preliminary insights into who's playing at a really high level in 2025. These are my picks for who deserves to win awards after four weeks, as opposed to my predictions of who will actually win the awards at the end of the season. I'm paying attention to what the voters typically prefer, but this is based solely on what I've found by watching tape and looking closely at the numbers after four games. If there's something unique about how I'm considering the candidates for a particular award, I'll mention that in the introduction for that award.
Way-Too-Early NFL Awards: Who Are the Leaders For Each Top Honor?
NFL coaches, spoiled by decades of 16-game seasons, liked the simple fractions that allowed them to tell their teams a season was neatly split into four quarters, each a portion-controlled four games to evaluate and move on from.
We live in a 17-game world now, not so readily quartered, but we can still stop after four games, ignore the valid "small sample size" warnings and look at the 2025 NFL season.
Teams — and players — are not bound to finish as who they've been so far. A year ago, the Philadelphia Eagles were 2-2 and coming off a 17-point loss, and they would go 16-1 the rest of the way and win a championship. The wheels can come off a promising start, and others can overcome a rough patch out of the gates to have amazing seasons.

NFL MVP odds: Josh Allen pulls ahead after Lamar Jackson injury – The Athletic
Last week, we asked if anyone could challenge the Allen-Jackson show. Unfortunately, the challenge came in the form of an injury and a Ravens loss. Lamar Jackson exited in the third quarter of Baltimore’s 37-20 loss to Kansas City, and Jackson’s status could reportedly miss Week 5.
Josh Allen is the clear leader to win MVP in BetMGM’s odds after Week 4. He has +110 odds to win it, which implies a nearly 50 percent likelihood. He improved from +250 last week. Jackson, who was +300 last week, sank to +650, though he’s still in second place ahead of the Chargers’ Justin Herbert at +700.
