Last weekend, Arizona took a tough loss to the No. 14-ranked Iowa State Cyclones in its first Big 12 matchup of the season, losing 39-14 in hostile territory at Jack Trice Stadium.

The Wildcats competed hard, but mistakes on the offense at the biggest moments, paired with the defense giving up big plays, spelled disaster at the start of the game.

Running back Trey Benson is headed for injured reserve due to a knee injury, head coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters Wednesday. The team later officially made the move.

Benson is expected to return this season, according to Gannon, but the move to IR necessitates that he miss at least four games.

Benson's injury and roster move represents the second significant loss at the position for the Cardinals in as many weeks. Arizona lost lead back James Conner to a season-ending foot injury in Week 3 and was forced to turn to Benson as the new starter beginning with the team's Week 4 Thursday night loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Trey Benson Placed On IR As Cardinals' Running Back Room Shuffles Again

When James Conner was lost for the season with a foot injury, it was supposed to be Trey Benson's opportunity to prove himself a starting running back.

Coach Jonathan Gannon said Wednesday the second-year back was going on IR on Wednesday with a knee injury suffered against the Seahawks, keeping him out at least four games and dealing another blow to an offense that is trying to get on track and a running game that has struggled all season.

Gannon said Benson should return this season. Gannon said he believes Benson played through the injury on Thursday after it happened. He didn't bring up any issues until Friday morning. ESPN reported Benson had arthroscopic surgery.
