Bama upsets UGA, showing 'fight' after early loss

Ty Simpson rolls out and hits Jam Miller to seal Alabama's win over Georgia. (0:31)

ATHENS, Ga. — Ty Simpson was the last Alabama player off the field after finishing up his postgame television interview, and as he walked toward the tunnel to the locker room, he had one last point to make to the remaining Georgia faithful.

Behind Simpson and his pinpoint performance in the passing game, No. 17 Alabama held on to beat No. 5 Georgia 24-21 on Saturday night, ending the longest active FBS home winning streak at 33 games.

With that, Alabama answered questions about its road performance under coach Kalen DeBoer — 2-4 heading into the game — questions that grew louder after a dispiriting loss at Florida State in the season opener.

Nick Saban asked about Kirby Smart’s lack of success against Alabama

With the 24-21 loss to Alabama, the Georgia Bulldogs fell to 1-7 against the Crimson Tide under Kirby Smart, who was the defensive coordinator under Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa.

On Monday, Saban, now an ESPN analyst, was asked what the biggest challenge for Smart was in finding success against the Tide.

“You ought to ask Kirby that,” Saban told the gathered media at the Monday Morning Quarterback gathering in Birmingham. “I’m not here to judge Kirby. Kirby does a great job. They have a good team. They are going to be a contender in the end, too.”

Ty Simpson passed for 276 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score as Alabama handed the Bulldogs their first home loss in six years.

Kalen DeBoer delivers the win Alabama hired him for — and avoids the loss he couldn’t afford

ATHENS, Ga. — Kalen DeBoer barely broke stride as he walked victoriously off Dooley Field.

The Alabama coach wasn’t beaming or bouncing as he adjusted his hat and nodded at a player. He didn’t look like the man who was under fire four weeks ago but had just earned a statement-making, pressure-releasing 24-21 victory at No. 5 Georgia.

Until he made it under the stands. As he neared the locker room, DeBoer finally pumped his left fist in the air. It was a muted celebration for a coach who won the type of marquee game he was brought here to win.
