Before ‘Severance,’ Ben Stiller Made This Critically Acclaimed 89% RT True-Crime Thriller Now Leaving Netflix
Many viewers may agree that Severance has been Ben Stiller’s magnum opus as a director, but it was far from his first impressive series that he was behind. Before writer Dan Erickson arrived on the scene with the eerie and strange anti-capitalist series, Stiller helmed the limited Showtime show, Escape at Dannemora. Inspired by the true events of the upstate New York prison break, the series follows David Sweat (Paul Dano) and Richard “Hacksaw” Matt (Benicio del Toro) in their The Shawshank Redemption-esque bid to find freedom.
Escape at Dannemora pairs humor and drama in the same seamless way that Severance would do years later. This is large in part due to the specific characters portrayed by Dano, Del Toro, and Patricia Arquette in leading roles. Arquette plays the catalyst of the series, Tilly, whose relationship with both men allows their eventual escape. A civilian who works as a supervisor in the prison tailor shop, Tilly quickly falls into a sexual relationship with Sweat. Uninterested in any subtlety whatsoever, the relationship is quickly discovered, and the two are separated. However, Sweat’s friend Hacksaw notes the dynamic and realizes he can use it to his own advantage. After seducing Tilly himself, he plays the people around him like pawns to encourage Tilly to get the tools that will allow him and Sweat to escape the prison. Escape at Dannemora is a fascinating study of loneliness and desperation as the three main characters make decisions against their own self-interest. It isn’t a surprise that Arquette would go on to appear in Stiller’s future work on Apple TV+.
Netflix fans have just weeks left to watch 'cool as hell' series starring Severance icon
Netflix subscribers have just weeks left to watch a popular series before it is removed from the streaming platform.
Starring Severance icon Patricia Arquette, Escape at Dannemora was first released in 2018 but only made its way to Netflix in October 2024. However, the eight-episode mini-series, based on the story of two real-life prisoners who escaped a maximum-security prison, is now due to leave the streamer on October 22.
The Emmy-nominated show depicts the jailbreak committed by inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat, including the involvement of the prison employees who aided and abetted them. Another popular series set to leave the streamer next month is The Family Business.

Ben Stiller Was Almost In This Classic David Lynch Movie
For the longest time during the filmmaking career of the dearly departed David Lynch, fans, critics, and even collaborators were mystified as to the artist's process. Some believed him to simply be weird for weirdness' sake, while others harbored the suspicion that Lynch was some galaxy-brained enigmatic genius who held all the answers but refused to give them. While the latter belief was partially true in some cases, more often than not, Lynch was merely following his own creative muse, spurred on by the man's fervent belief in the practice of Transcendental Meditation. Through his T.M., as in his dreams, Lynch would come upon an idea (or, even more likely, an image) that would compel him, and thus would find a way to insert it in whatever movie he was working on at the time. It's erroneous to say that Lynch was entirely ignorant of cinema of the past or present — his Masterclass is proof enough of this — yet Lynch was certainly not solely influenced by other films, nor was he all that invested in the politics of Hollywood.
