Crunchyroll Boss on the Blockbuster Implications of ‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’: “It’s Now Undeniable How Big Anime Has Become”
Crunchyroll chief Rahul Purini discusses how much bigger the $555 million hit might grow, plans for the next two films in the trilogy and why anime is now a core Sony growth engine.
The late summer box office has delivered an unlikely juggernaut: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — Infinity Castle. The anime epic has stormed past $555 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time and the top-earning anime feature ever released. In North America, where anime movies were once relegated to the margins, Infinity Castle has stunned with $104 million in two weekends — by far the biggest U.S. theatrical run ever for a Japanese title. Given anime fandom’s penchant for repeat viewings — and a rumored China release still in the works — there’s no telling just how rich Infinity Castle’s worldwide haul might become.

It's official: Demon Slayer Infinity Castle beat Mugen train
After Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle's incredible box office debut, the only question remaining was whether the movie could beat the record held by the franchise's previous feature film, Mugen Train. The answer is a resounding "yes." According to Box Office Mojo, Infinity Castle's worldwide gross is $555,003,707 at the time of writing, easily beating Mugen Train's previous record of $486,451,200 and becoming the highest-grossing anime movie of all time.
While fans of the franchise were sure this would happen sooner or later, there were plenty of doubters still. Mugen Train's success was often attributed to the timing of its release. Coming out in the fall of 2020, during a brief respite from COVID-19 restrictions, it didn't have a lot of competition in movie theaters at the time. While these may still have been important factors, Infinity Castle's success proves that people simply love to watch Demon Slayer at the cinema. And for good reason.
