Frog embryo case: Feds drop smuggling charges against Russian scientist at Harvard Medical School

The Massachusetts US Attorney’s Office has dropped federal charges against a Harvard Medical School research scientist from Russia who was accused of smuggling frog embryos into the United States, citing high costs that “outweigh the public interest,” of continuing to prosecute, court documents filed Tuesday said.

Kseniia Petrova was returning from France when she was stopped at Logan International Airport on Feb. 16, 2025. She had unclaimed frog embryo samples and slides in her luggage.

Petrova spent nearly four months in immigration detention and was indicted on three federal felony charges of smuggling clawed frog embryos and embryonic samples, concealment of material facts, and making a false statement.

US prosecutors drop criminal charges against scientist detained over frog embryos

Kseniia Petrova was detained for four months after arrest with research samples, and feared deportation to Russia

Federal prosecutors have dropped all criminal charges against a Russian scientist who spent four months in immigration detention after flying into Boston with frog embryos intended for cancer research at Harvard Medical School.

Kseniia Petrova, 31, was arrested in March 2025 after returning from a vacation in France, where she had visited a laboratory specializing in cutting extremely thin sections of frog embryos. During her visit, she obtained a package of samples for her research back in the US.

Customs officials questioned Petrova about the samples when she arrived at Logan international airport. She was later charged with smuggling, concealing facts and making false statements to government officials.

Scientist who brought frog embryos to Boston for cancer research is cleared of smuggling charges

US prosecutors have dropped all criminal charges against a Russian scientist who was tossed into an immigration jail last year after she landed at a Boston airport with frog embryos intended for her cancer research at Harvard Medical School.

Kseniia Petrova, 31, spent four months in detention following her arrest in early 2025 as she returned from a vacation in France, where she had stopped at a lab specializing in splicing superfine sections of frog embryos and obtained a package of samples for research.

She was questioned about the samples while passing through a customs checkpoint at Logan International Airport, then later charged with smuggling.
