The defense show circuit keeps rolling, plus Jimmy Stewart goes to war
The Breakout previews a busy week overseas and takes a closer look at the Hollywood star who became an Air Force general.
Breaking Defense Editor-in-Chief Aaron Mehta looks ahead to a crowded week for the defense industry, with Euronaval underway in Paris and the International Fighter Conference convening in Germany. IFC comes at a particularly interesting moment for European airpower, as questions remain about the continent’s sixth-generation fighter plans and the growing role unmanned aircraft could play alongside future jets.
Then Breaking Defense Multimedia Director Daniel Woolfolk explores actor Jimmy Stewart’s lesser-known military career ahead of the nationwide release of “Jimmy.” The film’s director and Stewart’s daughter discuss the silver screen star’s decision to put Hollywood aside to serve during World War II, his later years in the Air Force Reserve and how wartime experiences shaped his return to acting.
'Jimmy' Review: KJ Apa Is James Stewart In biopic Of WWII Years
When Kelly Stewart Harcourt (who is also an executive producer) was told about the idea of making a movie about her father, the Oscar-winning legend James Stewart, her reaction was that it might be pretty boring since her dad didn’t live a life full of scandals, drugs, drinking or other staples of biopics about movie stars. In other words he was a straight-up guy. Then she learned the pitch wasn’t to do a standard birth-to-death film in the genre, but one that focused on the period of his life of which he was most proud: his service in the U.S. military. More specifically, in World War II, where he flew 20 missions over Europe as a combat pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps, rising to the title of Colonel at war’s end (and ultimately Brigadier General). It was, she says, something he never spoke about to her or her siblings.
