Colts first-rounder Tyler Warren becomes centerpiece of offense

Kurt Warner breaks down why the Colts' Daniel Jones might have had the best quarterback performance of Week 1. (1:09)

INDIANAPOLIS — Tyler Warren's first play of his first NFL season told you everything you needed to know about his place in the Indianapolis Colts offense.

The rookie tight end, drafted 14th by the Colts, was the first read for quarterback Daniel Jones on the team's first play from scrimmage in Sunday's season opener.

Jones used play-action to Jonathan Taylor to the right side to freeze the defense, then bootlegged to his left, where Warren had escaped Miami Dolphins defensive end Jaelan Phillips and was wide open.

Broncos CB Pat Surtain II Highlights Threat Posed by Colts TE Tyler Warren

As the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Denver Broncos All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II doesn't have to obsess over statistical achievements. Entering Week 2's matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, Surtain proved in the season-opener that his lockdown abilities are still elite.

As Tennessee Titans' wide receiver Calvin Ridley can attest to, throwing a blanket over opposing pass-catchers is what motivates Surtain. The Broncos' shut-down corner didn't relinquish a single catch last week, but that's not how he'd define the perfect game.

"Shoot, maybe like three picks and three touchdowns or something like that," Surtain said this week. "A crazy stat line. It's crazy because I feel like a great corners, you don't often see them fill a stat sheet up. A lot of people tend to look at highlights and stats, but I feel like, as a cornerback, the main job for you to do is to eliminate opposing receivers from getting yards and getting completions. I feel like when you're doing your job in that part, it speaks louder than just a highlight reel."

Broncos aim to contain Colts' 'very dynamic' weapon

The Colts used their first-round pick in this year's NFL draft to select Penn State tight end Tyler Warren. Although he officially plays tight end, Warren is a dynamic weapon who can be used in multiple roles, similar to how Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton used Taysom Hill during his time with the New Orleans Saints.

"He is a special player," Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said. "The size and the ball skills. I told Sean he has some Taysom Hill in him. He can run the football; he has thrown the football in college; he is a receiver; he is an in-line tight end blocker. He’s an all-around good player. You saw it last week in the first two or three drives. The plays are being designed for him to make, and he is making them. Having a plan for that player is going to be critical.”
