‘The Simpsons’ Surprise: Apu Is Heard for the First Time in Nearly a Decade, as Sunil Malhotra Takes Over for Hank Azaria (EXCLUSIVE)

“The Simpsons” has pulled off its own October surprise: Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is back. The fan favorite character finally spoke again for the first time in nearly a decade on Sunday night’s episode, “The Revengening.” Variety has exclusively learned who is behind Apu’s new voice: actor and voice-over vet Sunil Malhotra (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Legend of Korra”).
Malhotra’s hiring and the return of Apu — who has been seen, but not heard on “The Simpsons” since the October 2017 episode “The Serfsons” — was a closely guarded secret inside “The Simpsons” universe. Fox didn’t share a screener for “The Revengening,” and producers kept both the episode’s table read and its subsequent production under tight protocols (including NDAs for all involved).

Apu is back on "The Simpsons"… and he sounds a little different.
Springfield's friendly Kwik-E-Mart owner spoke for the first time in nearly a decade in Sunday's episode of the long-running Fox cartoon, and the words came from a new voice actor: Sunil Malhotra ("Grey's Anatomy") will voice Apu on the show going forward, TVLine has confirmed. (Variety first reported the news.) He replaces Hank Azaria, who voiced Apu from the show's premiere through 2020, when he stepped aside amid mounting criticism of a white actor voicing an Indian character.
Apu will be seen and heard more often on the show now that Malhotra has been cast, executive producer Matt Selman tells Variety: "We love this character, and wanted to bring him back in a smart, 'Simpsons'-y way that allowed him to evolve. We're excited by what Sunil has already brought to the role, and look forward to seeing more of Apu in the future." This week's episode also saw the debut of Janina Gavankar ("The Morning Show") as Apu's wife Manjula, a role formerly voiced by Jan Hooks and Tress MacNeille.

The New Apu Makes His Debut Tonight On ‘The Simpsons’
Hank Azaria voiced the character for close to 30 years until a 2017 documentary ignited a backlash over how the character represented South Asians. Since then, the fan favorite has been seen on the show, but not heard. Until now.
Tonight’s episode, “The Revengening,” is a prelude to next week’s annual “Treehouse of Horror” frightfest. It centers on a mysterious figure and a plot out of the Scream movies. When the mystery man finally reveals himself, it turns out he is none other than Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.
Apu not only has a new lease on life in Springfield, he has a new actor voicing him: Sunil Malhotra. Malhotra has a long list of voice credits, including in massively popular video games such as World of Warcraft, League of Legends, Halo: Reach, Fallout 4, Mortal Kombat 1 and many more. On TV, he has appeared on ER, Grey’s Anatomy, Cold Case, House, NCIS: New Orleans, The Loud House, Monster High and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi.
