Austin Reaves Makes Candid Admission About Lakers' Biggest Preseason Problem

The Los Angeles Lakers will head into their fourth of five preseason games on Tuesday with one glaring problem, which starts with the team’s two best players, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

Although it is only the preseason and these games are meaningless in terms of stats, wins and losses, the results of these exhibition matchups can be telling regarding on-court problems that need to be solved before the regular-season opener.

Perhaps the biggest problem for the Lakers, with only two more preseason games left on the schedule, is the large number of turnovers the team has committed.

After practice earlier this week, Reaves admitted he and Doncic need to clean up their issues in that area.

Lakers News: Austin Reaves Details How Relationship With Luka Doncic Grew So Strong

Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic are the faces of the Los Angeles Lakers moving forward after LeBron James departure. It’s been a natural progression for Reaves to get to this point, while Doncic was surprisingly traded to the team in 2024.

It took time for the Slovenian star to get acclimated to Los Angeles, but he clearly looks adjusted to his new home now. Reaves has built an extremely close relationship with the All-NBA guard and the Arkansas native spoke about how that wasn’t initially the case, via Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated:

Ask a teammate to describe Doncic and the answers are less direct. Reaves counts Doncic among his closer friends. But getting there took time. Doncic kept to himself in the months after joining the Lakers. “He was kind of sheltered,” says Reaves. On the court he connected immediately. Off the court, he was a stranger. “For basically most of the rest of that year, we didn’t really speak to each other that much,” says Reaves. “I know he was going through stuff as far as the trade and being disappointed. I was never going to be the type of guy to force a friendship, so I let that build naturally.” And it did.
