Two North Carolinians dead from West Nile Virus

Two adults from Central North Carolina have died from the West Nile Virus this year.

The Centers for Disease Control reports 11 more cases in the state this year.

Dr Cameron Wolfe, an infectious disease expert with Duke Health, said if you get West Nile, you probably won't know it.

Possible symptoms the CDC lists are flu-like, such as a fever with headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash.

The CDC recommends preventing mosquito bites as the best way to protect yourself and loved ones.

You can also use an insect repellent, wear loose fitting shirts and pants, and avoid being outside between dusk and dawn when the mosquitoes that spread West Nile virus are most active.

Two NC adults die after contracting West Nile virus, state health department says

Two adults from central North Carolina have died after contracting West Nile virus, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.

The department announced the deaths on social media Friday. The deaths come after the department reported the first case of the disease in a Gaston County resident earlier this year. A West Nile virus-positive blood donor was also recently identified in Mecklenburg County through routine screening.

The state did not release information about where the deaths occurred in central North Carolina but warned residents to take preventative measures.

The mosquito-borne illness is carried by wild birds and transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes pick up the virus by biting infected birds, where the virus multiplies.

North Carolina officials report two West Nile virus deaths

Two adults from central North Carolina have died after contracting West Nile virus, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a total of 11 human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in North Carolina as of October 6

Older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions are at increased risk for severe outcomes and death. There are currently no human vaccines or specific treatments available for West Nile virus. The most effective protection is prevention.

Recommended preventive measures include using DEET or equivalent insect repellent on exposed skin, wearing long sleeves and long pants, choosing permethrin treated clothing, limiting outdoor activity between dusk and dawn, using window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out, and eliminating standing water to reduce mosquito breeding sites.
