Dog has zero chill about Montana’s first snow of the season

A dog frolics in fresh snow in a Helena, Montana, backyard after the season's first winter storm blanketed much of the state with heavy, wet snow. Winter storm warnings went up as Canadian cold air and the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel swept in, but Meadow the pup had only one thing on her mind. Watch the snowy fun unfold.

Winter storm continues to impact the region; Warnings and Advisories remain in effect

Winter weather continues to impact the region, with snow accumulations expected to remain above 4,000 feet through the weekend. Expect periodic travel impacts over mountain passes including Rogers, MacDonald, Homestake, and Lost Trail as well as valley roadways in southwest Montana. While lower valleys in western Montana may see a light dusting on grassy surfaces, impacts there will remain limited.

Gusty easterly winds will persist over Flathead Lake through early Monday, particularly along the eastern shore. Choppy waters will continue and localized tree damage remains a possibility with occasional gusts of 40-50 mph.

A widespread hard freeze is expected in the valleys Monday through Wednesday mornings. Cloud cover lingering after the weekend system may limit how cold temperatures fall, but as of now Tuesday morning looks to be the chilliest. That said, residents should finalize winterization preparations regardless of which morning will be coldest.

Montana's first winter storm causes accidents, delays for travelers

BUTTE — The first winter storm of the year blanketed Montana with snow and caused some problems for those traveling over Homestake Pass on Oct. 11.

Watch here truck drivers talk about winter driving conditions in Montana:

Around midafternoon on Sunday, Montana Highway Patrol announced westbound lanes on the pass were closed as emergency crews responded to a crash involving an injury in an overturned semi-truck.

Motorists on social media reported being stuck on the pass for hours while the scene was cleared.

Road conditions were still sketchy on Oct. 12 before noon, but for those used to driving the steep mountain passes, the change in the weather at this time of year is to be expected.
