20 Years Ago, the Best Sci-Fi Show of the Century Delivered the Most Epic Space Battle in TV History

The Adama Maneuver wasn’t even the most spectacular part of Battlestar Galactica’s greatest space battle

To liberate the humans trapped under Cylon occupation, Admiral William Adama (Edward James Olmos) jumps the titular Battlestar Galactica directly into the atmosphere of New Caprica. The warship plummets toward the settlement and deploys Viper fighter jets amidst the chaos before jumping back into space moments before it would have crashed, likely obliterating the planet on impact.

Two decades later, this spectacle from Battlestar Galactica season 3’s “Exodus, Part 2” remains unforgettable sci-fi TV. It’s dazzling and horrifying, and still one of the coolest things ever broadcast on science-fiction television. From a tactical standpoint, the “Adama Maneuver” is absolutely bonkers and one of the riskiest spaceship tactics, perhaps ever (sorry, Vice-Admiral Holdo). What if the ship had gotten torn apart from ripping through the atmosphere? What if the FTL drive malfunctioned or didn’t activate in time? Somehow, it’s also not even the most visually impressive sequence in the episode.

Battlestar Galactica Marks 20 Years Since Its Darkest Season

Twenty years after its third season premiered on October 6, 2006, Battlestar Galactica remains notable for combining large-scale space battles with an unsettling examination of occupation, resistance, and moral compromise. The science fiction drama follows humanity's survivors as they fight the robotic Cylons, whose control of New Caprica forces both sides to confront the consequences of their actions.

Created as a reimagining of the 1978 series, the show was developed by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick. Its third season opened with Occupation and Precipice, which examined life under Cylon rule before Exodus, Part 1 and Exodus, Part 2 delivered the rescue operation that transformed the story.

20 Years Ago, The Best Sci-Fi Show Of The Century Went Darker Than Ever Before

Battlestar Galactica’s third season began with one of the most hardcore storylines ever, which holds up like it aired yesterday.

While it may sound like hyperbole, the truth is, we never really knew how good we had it when Battlestar Galactica was still airing new episodes. Launched as a reboot for the 1978 series of the same name, the Battlestar miniseries in 2003 proved that a new version of an old concept need not be too precious with its source material, and by the end of its second season in March 2006, Ronald D. Moore and David Eick's Battlestar Galactica had eclipsed the original series in both creativity and cultural relevance. Season 2 also delivered one of the show’s greatest cliffhangers, and perhaps one of the best cliffhangers in TV history: After finding a meh planet to settle on, humanity elects corrupt scientist Gaius Baltar (James Callis) as the new president, and the series about a fleet of spaceships suddenly became about a bunch of people living on a depressing planet, now occupied by the robotic Cylons.
