Xander makes savvy moves on basepaths, in field as Padres stay alive
SAN DIEGO – There is the phrase “Act like you’ve been there before.”
Well, Xander Bogaerts actually has – and it showed in big moments of the Padres’ 4-3 Game 3 win over the Brewers on Tuesday to stave off elimination in the National League Division Series.
The two-time World Series-winning shortstop impacted the Padres’ victory on both sides of the field. Playing in his 14th season, Bogaerts delivered youthful acrobatics on the basepaths and the veteran wherewithal to make clutch defensive plays that helped push the Padres to a Game 4 on Wednesday.
Tied up 2-2 with two outs in the top of the fifth, the Brewers threatened with runners on first and second. William Contreras sliced a 98 mph ground ball to shortstop off reliever Jason Adam. If it gets by Bogaerts, a run is likely to score. But Bogaerts and his career .978 fielding percentage said otherwise.

The Opener: King The Closer, Playoff Kiké, Acuna’s Knee Injury
The Brewers can’t seem to win a playoff game away from American Family Field. Milwaukee has dropped 12 straight postseason games on the road, matching the longest streak in playoff history (h/t Adam McCalvy of MLB.com).
With Adrian Morejon ailing and Mason Miller on paternity leave, the Padres turned to Michael King to close out Game 3. The Game 2 starter navigated the final six outs to keep San Diego alive in the NLDS. It was the first time a pitcher secured a six-out save in the postseason two days after making a start, relays Jayson Stark of The Athletic. King ran into some trouble in the ninth inning, walking two to put the tying run in scoring position. Christian Yelich then scorched a grounder right to Xander Bogaerts for a game-ending double play. Walker Buehler will get the ball for the Padres tonight. The Brewers’ starter is TBD.
