PPS is closing schools but may not see a big budget payoff. Here's why.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — When the school bell rings for the new school year in the fall of 2027, hundreds of Portland Public Schools (PPS) elementary and middle school students may find themselves at a new school.

The district’s rightsizing effort is intended to reallocate resources to better serve an evolving, and dropping, student population.

PPS has consistently said the process is focused on student outcomes, not dollars and cents. But a KATU investigation found school closures may not deliver a major financial windfall for the district.

“The budget savings that usually happen in these right-sizing processes are not very large,” said Dr. Gabriel Huddleston, director for the Center for Public Education and Community Engagement at Texas Christian University. “You're not talking about a huge amount of money that's going to move the needle one way or the other.”
