Patient Gen X has Wine's Attention

In the world of wine, we spend a lot of time enthusing about the snowflake-level differences that result in the bottle depending on which vineyard and vintage the grapes inside of it were plucked from. But the people who drink those very particular and special wines often buy them because they were also sold them by someone, or some algorithm or bot, in a very specific, snowflake way.

Every age group has their particular needs and requirements. Right now, Gen Z and Millennials are hogging the headspace of producers and marketers eager to foist their wares on youngsters with many decades of spending ahead of them. But what about poor, forgotten Gen X, skulking over there in the corner?

Millennial history teacher explains the 3 phases of Gen X and why they were ‘forgotten’

Generation X occupies an interesting time in history, for those who care to recognize that they actually exist. They were born between 1965 and 1980 and came into this world at an interesting inflection point: women were becoming a larger part of the workplace and divorce was at the highest point in history. This left Gen X to be the least parented generation in recent history.

Gen X was overlooked in their domestic lives and culturally were overshadowed by Baby Boomers with their overpowering nostalgia for Woodstock, The Beatles, and every cultural moment celebrated in Forest Gump. Once Boomer navel-gazing nostalgia began to wane, a much larger and over-parented generation, the Millennials, came on the scene.

"Hanging by the Blockbuster door to see if any good movies were returned."

A swatch watch, Blockbuster video, and pack of Garbage Pail Kids cards.

Every generation has collective experiences in its youth that help define it. Baby Boomers (1946 to 1964) had the Kennedy assassination, the Vietnam War, and the Moon landing. Millennials (1981 to 1996) lived through 9/11, the Great Recession, and the social media revolution. What about Gen X (1965 to 1980)? In their youth, they experienced the fall of the Soviet Union, the rise of pop culture in the ‘80s, and Kurt Cobain’s suicide.

Gen Xers were also born in an in-between era after women entered the workforce and before the advent of helicopter parenting. They fell through the cracks and were often left on their own. That’s a big reason why they have a reputation for being resourceful and independent. They are also known to be a bit cynical and sarcastic, a trait that comes from the economic and social tumult they experienced as children.
