EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) — Northwestern University opened a new chapter in its football history Friday night with the debut of the new Ryan Field, a stadium that replaces the venue that traces its roots back 100 years.
Parents, alumni and fans gathered for pregame tailgating ahead of the first game at the new facility. Outside the stadium, workers were still putting the finishing touches on the project as opening time approached.
The grand opening got underway later Friday evening, offering Northwestern fans their first look inside the Wildcats' new home.
"It's fantastic. They've been down to the wire working really hard," said neighbor Mark Hansen, who has watched construction since it began.

“It’s a lot of purple,” said Liu, a double major in neuroscience and film from Vancouver, British Columbia. “It really brings the school spirit immediately because I’ve been to stadiums for concerts and stuff, but no stadium really hits like this. It’s the school color and it’s very impactful when you see it because it’s really themed around Northwestern.”
