Phillies expect Turner (hamstring) back by playoffs

PHILADELPHIA — Phillies star shortstop Trea Turner was placed on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 1 strained right hamstring but is expected back by the postseason.

Manager Rob Thomson said before Monday's game against the New York Mets the MRI results were "better than expected" and that Turner's injury wasn't as severe as the strained left hamstring that sidelined him for six weeks last season.

Turner left Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins in the seventh inning because of the injury.

Turner hit a solo homer in the sixth to narrow Philadelphia's deficit to 4-2. When his turn came again in the seventh, Turner legged out a grounder and reached on a throwing error by Miami shortstop Otto Lopez.

Turner, Bohm heading to IL; Harper leads off in opener vs. Mets

PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies kicked off a pivotal 10-day stretch on Monday by placing the entire left side of their starting infield on the injured list.

One day after exiting Sunday's finale against the Marlins, Trea Turner was placed on the 10-day IL with a strained right hamstring. Alec Bohm, meanwhile, landed on the 10-day IL with left shoulder inflammation in what was a more unexpected move.

Philadelphia recalled Otto Kemp from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and selected the contract of infielder Donovan Walton to fill the vacancies on the active roster.

All of those moves came prior to the Phillies' series opener against the Mets at Citizens Bank Park, which started a 10-day stretch bookended by a four-game series against the Mets and a three-game set against the Dodgers. The Phils entered with a seven-game lead over New York atop the NL East and a four-game edge over Los Angeles for the second and final bye in the NL.

Trea Turner leaves with a strained hamstring as the Phillies fall to the Marlins: ‘Didn’t feel good.’

The Phillies' star shortstop will undergo an MRI on his right hamstring Monday in Philadelphia. Turner missed six weeks last season with a strained left hamstring.

MIAMI — Trea Turner didn’t reach for the back of his leg or come up limping at first base. But he knew something was wrong.

“It was just kind of grabbing on me,” he said later. “Didn’t feel good.”

So, after reaching on an error in the seventh inning, Turner made a swift right turn and disappeared into the Phillies’ dugout and down the tunnel to the clubhouse.

And suddenly, a 5-4 loss to the Marlins wasn’t the worst thing to happen to the Phillies here Sunday.
