Major Hurricane Nolo weakens slightly, on track away from main Hawaiian islands
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hurricane Nolo has weakened very slightly but is still a major category 4 system that is threatening the Papahānaumokuakea Marine National Monument.
The National Hurricane Center said at 11 a.m. Monday, Nolo was 420 miles southwest of Honolulu, or 475 miles south-southeast of French Frigate Shoals, and was moving to the west-northwest at 12 miles per hour.
Nolo’s maximum sustained winds decreased slightly to 145 miles per hour. Hurricane force winds extend up to 35 miles from the center, while tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 150 miles,
Nolo is anticipated to gradually weaken starting Monday night, with more rapid weakening through the middle of the week as it turns toward the northwest later Monday, followed by a turn to the north.
County of Maui urges residents to prepare for prolonged power and communications outages
The County of Maui is urging residents to take proactive steps tonight as prolonged power outages and intermittent cellular service are expected to continue in parts of Maui County overnight and into Monday, Sept. 28.
Hawaiian Electric recently announced that power outages in West Maui are expected to continue until approximately noon Monday. The Public Safety Power Shutoff, or PSPS, remains in effect in Upcountry Maui due to high winds, dry conditions and increased wildfire risk. Some Upcountry areas are also experiencing outages unrelated to the PSPS, and restoration efforts for those outages are ongoing.
With power outages potentially affecting cellular and internet service, residents who lose connectivity are encouraged to use a battery-powered or hand-crank radio to monitor local radio stations for emergency information and County updates.

‘Storm fatigue’: Hawaiians reeling from back-to-back hurricanes as Nolo’s threats diminish
HILO, Hawaii — Hawaiians have storm fatigue, Hilo’s mayor said Sunday, as the third hurricane to approach the islands in recent weeks continues to spin offshore.
The relatively calm state has been battered by the effects of multiple hurricanes, including Lala, Lowell and now Nolo, as the eastern and central Pacific have churned out at least 19 named storms. None of the three hurricanes has made landfall in Hawaii.
“So there’s storm fatigue and there’s some PTSD,” Mayor Kimo Alameda told NBC News on Sunday.
“I mean, you know, there’s a lot of anxiety around the weather now. You know, a lot of our folks out in the south side, they experienced, you know, catastrophic flooding,” he said, referring to the impacts of Hurricane Lala last month.
