I was unable to get to my remoteâs mute button fast enough before yet another new mud-slinging political ad belched forth from my television. It starts with a man asking, âWho is Mary Peltola, really?â Seemed like no one appearing in the ad could figure out a satisfactory answer to the question, but one remark did not escape my attention: âThey dress her up, threw her out on the stream somewhere; make her look like an Alaskan.â
What an interesting remark coming from a guy in a puffy vest and perhaps a flannel shirt, as per the macho Alaska dress code? If I were an Alaska Native, and I am not, I would be offended by this remark. If I were a woman, and I am, I am offended by this remark. Just exactly what is an Alaska woman supposed to look like? And who are âtheyâ who get to dress us up? We are not Barbie dolls, you know.

Peltola’s friendly public image has been one of her political assets. She smiles, she hugs, she seems so nice. Insiders know it’s all an act. AB new investigation by The New York Times raises a question — and answers it: How does she treat the people who work for her when the cameras are off?
The Times interviewed nine former staff members, spoke with more than 20 other people in Peltola’s political orbit, and reviewed text messages and photographs. Former aides described angry outbursts, staff members reduced to tears, unusually high turnover in her congressional office and a shake-up of her US Senate campaign just days before Alaska’s August primary. Peltola’s campaign denies a pattern of abusive behavior and disputes several of the incidents.
