US coast guard suspends search for man who reportedly jumped off cruise ship
Agency says it scoured 1,707 sq miles between California and Mexico with no sighting of Tom Gigler
The US coast guard has suspended its search for the 56-year-old man who reportedly jumped off a Carnival cruise ship on Saturday.
“Decisions to suspend search operations are never easy and are made with careful consideration of all available information. Our hearts are with those impacted by his loss,” said Jessica Davila, chief of incident management for the coast guard south-west district.
The agency said it had scoured more than 1,707 sq miles for roughly 41 hours with no sighting of Tom Gigler.
The circumstances leading up to the jump remain unclear. Gigler was last seen on Friday evening. By 1.30pm on Saturday, he had been reported missing, according to the agency.
Passenger jumps overboard from Carnival Cruise ship before California port stop
A passenger jumped overboard from a cruise ship bound for Southern California from Mexico, prompting the vessel to turn around and launch a search Saturday.
The incident happened aboard the Carnival Panorama, operated by Carnival Cruise Line, as the ship was sailing from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Long Beach, a Carnival Cruise spokesperson confirmed to The California Post.
“Carnival Cruise Line confirmed Saturday that a male guest aboard Carnival Panorama jumped overboard while the ship was sailing from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Long Beach, California,” the cruise said in a statement to The Post.
