The Colts' defense didn't make excuses about or sugarcoat anything from their 41-23 season-opening loss to the Baltimore Ravens last weekend. It was, all around, a "bad game," as defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo put it.
But there's a difference in having one bad game and projecting that bad game on to the rest of a 17-game season. Especially when the issues from that one bad game began with a problem the Colts believe they've fixed – getting aligned before the ball is snapped.
"We didn't play to our standard at all whatsoever, and we know we're better than that and what we put on tape," defensive tackle DeForest Buckner said. "But obviously, you're only as good as your last game and that's what we put on tape. So we got to continue to prove to ourselves and prove to everybody else that we're a better defense than that."
Colts’ green dot gaffe falls firmly on coaching staff’s shoulders
If you’re the only team in the entire league asking a safety to don the green dot, maybe there’s actually good reason for it.
Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen indicated earlier this week that veteran linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither would wear the defense’s lone helmet transmitter, and thus, be denoted with the infamous green dot for rapidly communicating the defensive play-calling to his teammates on the field.
Having previously bestowed that honor to veteran safety Cam Bynum, it clearly didn’t work out during Sunday’s blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens, as the Colts defense clearly experienced numerous communication issues pre-snap and resulting blown coverage assignments thereafter.

Colts LB Akeem Davis-Gaither will wear helmet transmitter this week
The Colts are making a change to their defensive operations after getting blown out by the Ravens in Week 1.
Head coach Shane Steichen said on Wednesday, via multiple reporters, that linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither will wear the helmet transmitter and relay defensive calls to the rest of the unit this week. Safety Cam Bynum wore the green dot for the Ravens game.
The move comes a day after defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo said that the team was considering a change because of a number of communications breakdowns that helped the Ravens roll up 506 yards of offense in a 41-13 win. Davis-Gaither will be lined up in a more central spot on defense while Bynum was playing deeper in the secondary.
