Mayo developing into a key bat in the Orioles' lineup

BALTIMORE — The expectations were high for so many Orioles prospects earlier this decade. The farm system was loaded with talented young position players, and many thought these promising hitters would reach the big leagues and quickly have success.
It doesn’t always work that way. It certainly hasn’t for Coby Mayo, a 2020 fourth-round Draft pick and former top prospect who arrived in MLB in August of ‘24.
“It’s tough. The game is very unforgiving, and it’s a very tough league, especially when you’re young and coming up and you have these high expectations,” Mayo said. “People think that you’re just going to hit the ground running and be an All-Star by year one or year two, and that’s just not realistic sometimes. Sometimes, it takes longer. And I’m still figuring it out.”
Mayo’s improvement against RHP is keeping the slugger in the lineup
On the home stretch of a season filled with ups and downs, the development of Coby Mayo has been an undeniable bright spot.
His prowess against left-handed pitching, though well documented, is worth repeating. Entering play this afternoon, the slugger is slashing .316/.380/.735 against southpaws, good for a 1.115 OPS. Among players with at least 80 plate appearances against left-handers this season, that .735 slugging percentage is the best in baseball by a country mile.
The 1.115 OPS is the best, too, as is his 208 wRC+ and 16 home runs.
“The power numbers, I don’t know why I’m hitting so well and why I’m hitting so many homers off of them,” Mayo told Annie Klaff and I with a smile.
