Mold issues force Richmond school to move its first day
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – On Thursday afternoon, students and staff at Barack Obama Elementary attended open house outside in the school’s playground as crews work to address mold and rodent issues inside the building.
In a letter sent to families on Wednesday evening, Superintendent Jason Kamras told families a recent HVAC outage resulted in mold growth in the basement and on some furniture, impacting the school’s air quality.
“Very shocking,” said Jasmine Sheffield, a parent of a child who attends Barack Obama Elementary School. “This will be my son’s first year at the school. Not sure if he’ll start on the first day or not, so just a little apprehensive.”

Students at Barack Obama Elementary School, located in the city’s Northside, will have to start school at least one day late following an air quality test result that showed elevated levels of mold in the building.
The issue was first raised earlier this week when Superintendent Jason Kamras sent a letter to parents notifying them that administrators found mold growth in the school’s basement and on some furniture after a HVAC outage, impacting the school’s air quality.
The school district hired contractors to clean the building, change air filters and remediate the mold, while anticipating test results conducted by an independent vendor.
