Sale off IL, to make first start since June
Braves ace Chris Sale is back and will start Saturday's game against the Phillies.
The left-hander was reinstated from the injured list on Saturday after missing more than two months due to a fractured left rib. To make room for Sale, Atlanta optioned right-hander Nathan Wiles to Triple-A Gwinnett after Friday's game.
Sale has not pitched since June 18, when he went 8 2/3 innings in a 5-0 victory over the Mets. He made a diving stop on a chopper from Juan Soto to begin the ninth inning that night, and although he was able to record the out and continue in his magnificent start, tests later revealed that Sale fractured a rib on the dive.
Braves vs Phillies Preview: Chris Sale returns against Philadelphia
Chris Sale returns for Atlanta after a loss in Philly, in the midst of a lost season.
Wins and losses are fairly trivial this point, as the playoffs are pretty much off the table, although there is some real value in draft position. Chris Sale returns for Atlanta after breaking his ribs diving for a ball, as he wanted to get back to pitching competitively in preparation for a normal offseason.
The 36-year-old Sale was having a great season after a couple shaky (and unlucky) starts to begin the season, before the injury derailed him. He boasted a 2.69 FIP and a 3.20 xFIP over his 89.1 innings and was generally performing in line with his career baseline, which is quite possibly looking like a Hall of Fame career if he can put another good season or two together. Tomorrow will be about avoiding injuries for the injury-plagued veteran and hoping Chris can find his stuff and command in his few starts before the offseason.

Chris Sale isn’t just an ace. There’s another reason Braves are thrilled he’s coming off IL
PHILADELPHIA — It was here at Citizens Bank Park on March 31, 2024, when the Braves and their fans saw a prime example of why many of Chris Sale’s teammates with the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox called him the best teammate they ever had.
This was Sale’s debut with the Braves, the third game of the 2024 season, and Atlanta had a 3-2 lead against the Philadelphia Phillies with a runner on first base and one out in the sixth inning. That’s when Sale, who had thrown 83 pitches, was replaced by Joe Jiménez to face Nick Castellanos.
