‘I’m a Boston Celtic. I’ll never not be’: Doc Rivers, coach of 2008 NBA champs, enters the Hall of Fame
When Doc Rivers learned of his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the first call he made was to his brother, Grady Jr., who digested the news and then paused for several moments before responding.
Grady told Doc the emotions were sparked by thinking of their parents, Grady Sr., a Chicago police officer, and Bettye, a homemaker, who stressed to their kids to âfinish the race.â
The race ends Saturday in Springfield, where Rivers will be inducted as a coach, ranking sixth all-time with 1,194 wins in 27 seasons.
Rivers has been an NBA head coach for more than 40 percent of his life. He uplifted the Magic, taking the job at age 38. Along with president of basketball operations Danny Ainge, he resurrected the Celtics with Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce, winning a championship in 2008, and losing in Game 7 of the Finals two years later.

Doc Rivers is being enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend. If you looked at the internet and social media over the past 15 years, you’d never know Rivers was a Hall of Fame coach.
