Venomous snake hides in football player’s helmet during practice — while he wears it

On Thursday, a high school football player in Maumelle, Ark., practiced as he would any other day. Except that day, he had a passenger coiled inside his helmet.
“You’ve seen them on movies and TVs and all that stuff. Snakes getting into peculiar places,” Chris Davis, Maumelle’s director of animal services, told The Athletic. “A helmet, so be it. It doesn’t sound like it’s out of the ordinary, but what’s shocking was this kid had worn the helmet for at least an hour, if not longer.”
Citizens urged to watch out for hiding snakes
JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – A Maumelle High School football player found a venomous cottonmouth inside his helmet during practice, prompting warnings from snake relocators about where snakes hide and how to identify venomous species.
Snake relocator Brandon Gramling said snakes are drawn to dark, tight spaces — and that common methods for identifying venomous snakes are not reliable.
“A lot of people say look for the diamond-shaped head or the elliptical pupil or cat-eye pupil. That’s not a sure way of telling a venomous snake from a non-venomous snake because a lot of snakes that are non-venomous will often use that defensive mechanism,” Gramling said.
