Tehran Has to Make a Choice
When the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey got together last week to forge a new defense agreement, they emphasized that their pact wasn’t aimed at any particular country. But one country was surely on everybody’s mind: the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Iran has positioned itself as the most overtly anti-Western state in the region, and the coming together of three prominent Muslim-majority countries aligned with the West, two of which have land borders with Iran, signals its isolation. Iran has endured months of war with Israel and the United States without losing, but it has done so in part by repeatedly attacking neighboring countries that house U.S. military bases. Now these countries are among those closing ranks against Iran in an agreement signed in and named for Mecca, Islam’s holiest city.
Iran lawmaker warns of response to attacks from Mecca Pact members
Iran would respond without restraint if it is attacked from the territory of countries that are members of the Mecca Pact, Alireza Salimi, a member of parliament's presiding board, said on Tuesday.
The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement was signed last week by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan.
"If Iran is attacked from countries that are members of the Mecca Pact, we will respond without any consideration," Salimi said.
He said every coalition formed against the Houthis had failed and that the "resistance" could not be defeated through an agreement such as the Mecca Pact.
Germany's embassy in Tehran remains on emergency operations because of the security situation in Iran, with its visa section closed to regular visitors and no regular visa appointments being issued, the German Foreign Office told Iran International on Tuesday.
