Red Sox Select Raymond Burgos, Option Greg Weissert
The Red Sox announced that they have selected the contract of left-hander Raymond Burgos to the roster. Right-hander Greg Weissert has been optioned in a corresponding active roster move. The 40-man roster had a couple of vacancies, so no further moves are required. Rob Bradford of WEEI first reported the Burgos news, with Tim Healey of The Boston Globe first on Weissert.
So they lose Weissert for 10 days and bring up yet another big tall LHP, except this one has a 5.63 ERA this year.
I know they can afford to lose a game or two, but still doesn’t make sense.
Red Sox Select LHP Raymond Burgos from Triple-A Worcester
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today selected left-handed pitcher Raymond Burgos to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester. He will wear number 79. To make room, Boston optioned right-handed pitcher Greg Weissert to Triple-A Worcester after last night’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
Burgos, 27, has pitched in 15 games (14 starts) for Worcester this season, recording a 5.63 ERA (40 ER/64.0 IP) with 52 strikeouts. The left-hander has made one Major League appearance, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with one strikeout in 1.0 inning pitched for the San Francisco Giants against the Chicago Cubs on June 24, 2024. Originally selected by Cleveland in the 18th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, the Puerto Rico native was signed by Boston as a minor league free agent on May 7 and owns a 3.73 ERA (149 ER/359.1 IP) with 358 strikeouts in 159 career Minor League games (36 starts).

Red Sox's Raymond Burgos: Added to big-league bullpen
The Red Sox selected Burgos' contract from Triple-A Worcester on Friday.
Boston burned through its bullpen in Thursday's extra-innings win over the White Sox, and Burgos is being summoned as a fresh arm. He's worked almost exclusively as a starter with Worcester but will provide long relief for the Red Sox. He's pitched to a 5.63 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 52:26 K:BB across 64 innings at Triple-A.
