The Pennsylvania senator appeared on Stewart's weekly podcast in one of the most in-depth and toughest interviews he's faced in recent memory.

U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, in perhaps the most in-depth and toughest interview he has faced in recent memory, defended his unwavering support for Israel and his harsh criticisms of fellow Democrats when pressed by Jon Stewart in a podcast episode released Wednesday.

The liberal comedian and political commentator repeatedly accused Fetterman (D., Pa.) of “caricaturing” the left wing of his party and the debate around Israel’s handling of the war in Gaza.

“Jewish community and Israel are not the same thing, brother man. They’re not — that is not the same thing,” Stewart, who is Jewish, said at one point as Fetterman described his full-throated support for the war as being because of “the Jewish community.”

Fetterman, who has been criticized for aligning himself with MAGA ideologies, will appear on the upcoming episode of Stewart’s The Weekly Show podcast after declaring that he would leave the Democratic Party if it becomes “anti-Israel.”

He also said he didn’t believe Democrats who criticize Israel should be part of the Democratic Party. Stewart pushed back, questioning the extent of his declaration.

“You’re saying that these candidates may have great ideas for the economy, they may want to do the exact same thing you want to do in terms of getting money out of politics, they may want to increase the social safety net, they want to change the balance of power from capital back to labor, but if they don’t agree with you on Israel, you don’t want them in your Party,” Stewart clarified.

It’s not exactly unusual to see U.S. Sen. John Fetterman being interviewed by the national media: By one reckoning, he is Fox News’ favorite Democrat, presumably for his game willingness to criticize members of his own party for a conservative audience.

But his appearance on The Weekly Show with humorist Jon Stewart marked a departure: a nearly hour-and-a-half interview with a host who repeatedly challenged him with the concerns Democrats have about him.

The conversation did, however, begin on familiar territory: with a discussion of Fetterman’s wardrobe.

Fetterman, known for a casual dress style, appeared in a suit, prompting Stewart to ask, “Where's Senator Fetterman? All I see is a guy wearing a suit and tie. … You have a job interview today?”
