Ireland risk ECB ire by agreeing to play five matches against Afghanistan
First ODI of series will take place in Bready on Wednesday
Ireland’s decision to stage a full one‑day international series for their men’s team against Afghanistan this summer could cost them lucrative future fixtures against England.
The England and Wales Cricket Board is understood to be unhappy about the series, which starts on Wednesday, taking place as England refuse to play Afghanistan outside International Cricket Council (ICC) global events because of what the ECB chair, Richard Thompson, has described as the “gender apartheid” of the Taliban regime.
The ECB’s policy is backed by the UK government, but Cricket Ireland has taken a different view and has developed close relations with the Afghanistan Cricket Board, offering it five ODIs this month, all of which will take place in Northern Ireland. In a reciprocal arrangement Ireland will play Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates next March for one Test, three ODIs and three T20 fixtures.

Cricket Ireland CEO Sarah Keane appointed to the ICC's 'Afghanistan Task Force' ahead of ODI
Cricket Ireland have confirmed that they are working with the ICC, with CEO Sarah Keane appointed to a 'Afghanistan Task Force', ahead of the men's team clash with Afghanistan in the first of five One Day Internationals on Wednesday, in a statement released to RTÉ Sport.
The news comes amid a controversial backdrop surrounding the fixture, due to the ruling Taliban's treatment of the women's team, who have been forced to flee as women are banned from playing sport.
When the five ODI series was announced, it was also said that Cricket Ireland would be offering an invitation to Afghanistan's women's cricket side to face Ireland here this summer, but no fixture has been announced as of yet.
