Florida Senator Ashley Moody faces renewed scrutiny over her role in Hope Florida scandal

Ashley Moody has been in the United States Senate for 18 months and yet she remains a bit of an enigma. She doesn't do many interviews outside of the safe confines of conservative media, like Fox News. She keeps a low profile on most issues and even going back to her years as Florida's attorney general, she seemed most comfortable standing in the background at press conferences letting others do the talking.

That strategy has been successful. She won two statewide elections in 2018 and 2022, and it was her quiet fealty to Ron DeSantis that led to his decision in January 2025 to appoint her to the Senate to replace Marco Rubio.

Alex Vindman says Ashley Moody Senate seat a 'payoff' on Hope Florida

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman says Ashley Moody’s appointment to the U.S. Senate was a “payoff” for signing off on a Medicaid settlement that later became known as the Hope Florida scandal.

Vindman, who may be best known as the U.S. Army officer who helped spark the 2019 impeachment of President Donald Trump, is running as a Democrat for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat. Earlier this month, Vindman sat down for an interview with the News Journal at Scenic 90 Cafe in Pensacola.

Vindman said his campaign is “laser focused” on unseating Moody and tied her time as Florida Attorney General, when her office signed off on a $67 million Medicaid settlement with health care provider Centene, to her appointment to the U.S. Senate.

Sen. Ashley Moody faces more scrutiny over $10M Hope Florida scandal

U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody remains silent about why she approved $10 million in taxpayer funds to be transferred to Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis’ Hope Florida Foundation.

The $10 million, once it landed at the charity, was diverted to political action committees — one controlled by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ Chief of Staff James Uthmeier — that helped defeat 2024 ballot initiatives on abortion and marijuana.

The money from a $67 million Medicaid settlement was earmarked to expand health care for children.

The Hope Florida scandal is not going away as Democrats continue to use it as cannon fodder when possible. Lt. Col. Alex Vindman and State Rep. Angie Nixon are facing off in the primary to be the Democrat who challenges Moody in the fall.
