McKinney pushes Black representation in bid to unseat Thanedar
Detroit-area Democrats on Aug. 4 will choose between reelecting self-funded, two-term U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar or restoring Black representation to the majority-Black city by nominating state Rep. Donavan McKinney.
Both candidates are campaigning as anti-Trump fighters who support progressive policies including universal health care, eliminating U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and ending the war in Iran.
But political insiders view the Democratic primary in Michigan's 13th Congressional district as Thanedar's to lose with his sizeable advantage in funding and name recognition.
"I have delivered," Thanedar said. "I have done what my constituents want me to do. That’s why I believe I deserve a chance to go back to Washington, D.C., and continue my work."
