Sustainability board wants the environment to be ‘an underpinning’ of Lawrence’s next strategic plan

When Lawrence’s new strategic plan is crafted in the coming months, the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Board wants to make sure its vision is a green one.
The board met on Thursday night to further discuss what environmental policies and projects it should recommend to the City Commission, and its members said that while they should be coming up with policy recommendations in the near term, they also should be thinking ahead to the strategic planning process that will soon start in earnest.

The resounding sentiment from public commenters and board members at Thursday’s sustainability advisory board meeting was that Lawrence needs to be thinking about the environment at every possible level.
The board advanced a list of possible sustainability policies for community feedback, and the public delivered, between 11 speakers and four written comments.
Dominique Sexton put a challenge to the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Board to seed greater infrastructure throughout the city for environmental policies, starting with the upcoming strategic plan.
“I do worry that we’re not thinking big enough,” Sexton said. “… But are we actually trying to implement the understanding of sustainability and the environmental importance at every single level of our society?”

Voice your opinion on Lawrence’s upcoming strategic plan
Lawrence is working on Vision 2030 — the first update to the strategic plan since 2020 — and the city is inviting community members to provide their input.
The strategic plan is like a community roadmap with measurable goals, according to the Vision 2030 landing page.
“Our Strategic Plan should reflect the people who call Lawrence home,” said Casey Toomay, acting city manager, in a city news release. “Every conversation helps us better understand what our community values, what we’re doing well, and where we should focus as we look toward the future.”
2020’s plan established aims such as equity and inclusion, sound fiscal stewardship, environmental sustainability and more. The city had intended to adopt an updated plan five years after that plan. The current timeline aims to send Vision 2030 to the city commission to be adopted by the end of 2026.
