EXCLUSIVE: Pan Am’s Clipper Endeavor Found 74 Years After Plane Crash That Killed 52 People
An aviation search team has found the wreckage of a plane that crashed in the Atlantic Ocean more than seven decades ago, the Discovery Channel announced in a TODAY exclusive.
The team, whose efforts are chronicled in an upcoming episode of Discovery Channel’s “Expedition Unknown,” located the Pan Am aircraft, dubbed the Clipper Endeavor, some 2,000 feet in the water off Puerto Rico. The plane went down about 10 minutes into its flight from San Juan on April 11, 1952. Sixty-nine passenger and crew members were onboard; 52 people died, and 17 survived.
Using sonar and high-definition images, the team found the Pan Am logo, the plane’s landing gear and engine, solving a nearly 75-year aviation mystery and concluding years of search efforts.

Seventy-four years after a Pan Am flight crashed into the water off Puerto Rico, killing 52 people and prompting sweeping reforms including preflight passenger safety briefings, an aviation search team has found the wreckage sitting on the ocean floor.
The Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, in partnership with others including the Discovery Channelâs âExpedition Unknownâ show, last month found the wreckage of the Pan Am âClipper Endeavorâ at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean off Puerto Ricoâs northern coast, Discovery said in a release Tuesday.
The discovery, which involved an autonomous underwater drone, ends decades of mystery about precisely where the Douglas DC-4 aircraft came to rest after crashing into the ocean shortly after it took off from Puerto Rico on April 11, 1952, with 64 passengers and five crew members aboard.

Wreckage of a Pan Am plane that crashed off Puerto Rico's coast nearly 75 years ago has been found on the ocean floor, search teams scouting for the long-lost aircraft announced on Tuesday, July 21.
The passenger aircraft, dubbed the Clipper Endeavor, crashed and sank into the Atlantic Ocean on April 11, 1952, just minutes after it took off from the island's eastern capital of San Juan.
The plane, roughly the size of a modern Boeing 737, was bound for New York's Idlewild Airport (now JFK) when it suffered engine failure just after noon local time, according to the Pan Am Historical Foundation. It carried 64 passengers and five crew members. Seventeen people survived the crash.
