Davis, Zerwas officially take UT Austin leadership roles after regents' vote

New University of Texas President Jim Davis has a long history with the institution, most recently as its chief operating officer.

The University of Texas System Board of Regents voted Wednesday to approve Jim Davis as the UT president and John Zerwas as chancellor.  

Both candidates had served as interim leaders before their appointment and were named sole finalists in July in accordance with Texas law.  

Davis was selected from an alternative process permitted in the regents rules to promote an existing UT leader instead of a national search, the same process his predecessor, Jay Hartzell, who now is president of Southern Methodist University, also was appointed by. He was reviewed by a select committee that gave their "unanimous" support for Davis's appointment, Board Chairman Kevin Eltife said at the meeting.

AUSTIN, Texas — On Wednesday, the University of Texas Board of Regents officially hired James Davis as the university's next president and former Republican state Rep. Dr. John Zerwas as the next chancellor.

Both of them have been serving in those positions while the board searched for candidates to fill the roles.

The board named Davis and Zerwas as the sole finalists for their new jobs last month, but state law required them to wait 21 days before officially hiring them.

Zerwas has been with the UT system since 2019, and Davis has been with the UT system since 2018.
