Christopher Nolan gave John Leguizamo a blunt warning before Odyssey started filming

Christopher Nolan keeps a tight inner circle. Michael Caine has appeared in eight of his films. Cillian Murphy played supporting roles in five Nolan flicks before finally getting the starring part in Oppenheimer. Christian Bale proved himself in The Prestige before donning the cape and cowl in the Dark Knight trilogy. In other words, once you're in with Christopher Nolan, you're typically in for life. But the Oscar-winning filmmaker isn't afraid to work with new talent, either.

The Odyssey features several newcomers to Nolan's acting troupe, including Lupita Nyong'o, Tom Holland, and John Leguizamo. So when Polygon sat down with Leguizamo for an interview ahead of the film's release, we had to ask what it was like working with the director and what advice (if any) he got from his co-stars. The actor, who's starred in everything from the original Super Mario Bros. movie (he played Luigi) to the Ice Age franchise (he voices Sid the Sloth), revealed that the best guidance he got came directly from Nolan.

John Leguizamo can’t wait for you to see The Odyssey, but there’s one thing he wants audiences to know before they do. “I hope you understand, I was aged up,” he jokingly tells Seen on the Screen host Jacqueline Coley.

The actor isn’t lying. He sat for three and a half hours in the makeup chair to play Eumaeus, Odysseus’ most loyal servant and friend, in Christopher Nolan’s latest epic, The Odyssey. “You gotta go to a zen place,” he tells Coley. “[You’ve] got to leave your body and let them have it because you’re not moving for three and a half hours.” Needless to say, those hours spent were more than worth it to Leguizamo, as The Odyssey marks his first time working with Nolan. And, as he tells Coley, “To work with him was incredible.”

Christopher Nolan Secretly Changed One Odyssey Character To Honor Homer

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has a secret tribute to the epic's original author.

The upcoming movie based on the epic poem of the same name includes a secret character change that honors Homer, the story's original author. The Odyssey's story follows the ancient Greek warrior Odysseus (Matt Damon), the King of Ithaca, who makes the long, dangerous journey home following the end of the Trojan War. In the meantime, his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and his son, Telemachus (Tom Holland), await his arrival, as does another character who has faith in his return: Eumaeus, Odysseus' swineherd, portrayed by John Leguizamo.
