Who is Achraf Hakimi? A look at the controversial Morocco captain

As Morocco prepares to take on France in a World Cup quarterfinal at Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium) on Thursday, July 9, in a rematch of a 2022 semi-final, what should be a competitive and hard-fought fixture between two of the world's top teams carries an unfortunate distinction.

For the second time in seven World Cup matches in Foxboro, a player will go up against a national team from a country where he is currently facing rape charges.

Atlas Lions captain and defender Achraf Hakimi, who plays for Ligue 1 giants and back-to-back Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, is set to stand trial in France on a charge of rape stemming from an alleged assault in 2023. For his case, the 27-year-old strongly denies the allegations and says he looks forward to his day in court.

Morocco’s Hakimi asks France’s highest court to overturn rape trial order

The Paris Saint-Germain defender and Morocco captain has appealed to the Court of Cassation after judges confirmed he should face a criminal trial. Hakimi denies the allegation and remains presumed innocent. No trial date has been set.

Morocco captain and Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has appealed to France’s highest court in a bid to overturn a ruling that he should stand trial on a rape charge, the latest turn in a case he has denied since 2023.

Hakimi’s legal team lodged the appeal with the Court of Cassation, France’s top court for civil and criminal matters, a source close to the case told Agence France-Presse. Reuters also reported the filing. The move follows a June 19 decision by the Versailles Court of Appeal, which upheld an investigating judge’s order referring the 27-year-old to a criminal court.
