When it comes to horror movies, I am a wimp. A coward, a chicken, a scaredy-cat. It’s my favorite genre, but without fail, you can find me jumping and whimpering, even at buttoned-up film festivals and press screenings.
When I heard that David Fincher and Zach Cregger collaborated to help develop the interactive Netflix game “Unhinged,” I was so excited to give it a test drive. Not only does it come from the minds of two of the best directors working today, but unlike horror games that devolve into mowing down hordes of zombies with machine guns, this project promised more of a “you’re living in a horror movie” premise.

Hollywood and the video game industry have spent years borrowing from one another, recruiting top talent and adapting stories in pursuit of true cross-media convergence. Yet despite the rise of cinematic games and a steady stream of game-to-screen adaptations, the two mediums have largely remained distinct experiences. Netflix Games and Night School Studio’s latest title, Unhinged, is among the clearest recent attempts to blur that line and prove that this is one call you don’t want to miss.
Part thriller, part horror experience and part interactive film, Unhinged drops players into the middle of a Category 5 hurricane bearing down on South Carolina. Zoë Kravitz stars as Ava, a young woman attempting to flee her apartment complex after a power outage. Safety appears within reach as her best friend Claire, voiced by Sadie Sink, races through the storm to pick her up. But when an seemingly unsuspecting superintendent, played by video game veteran Troy Baker, begins hunting her through the darkened building, Ava’s escape quickly spirals into a nightmare.

The company's latest foray into interactive content is called Unhinged. The game was developed by Night School Studio, which Netflix bought in 2021. It centers on Ava, a woman who wakes up in the middle of the night during a massive storm that knocks out the power in her building. Ava, voiced by Zoë Kravitz, communicates with her best friend Claire (Sadie Sink) and her building's superintendent Ben (Troy Baker) as she tries to unravel the mystery of a killer who says they're coming for Ava and the rest of the building's residents.
