Live coverage: ULA to launch final Atlas 5 rocket supporting Amazon Leo’s broadband internet satellite constellation

Update July 2, 1:30 a.m. EDT (0530 UTC): ULA confirms deployment of the 29 Amazon Leo satellites.

United Launch Alliance closed a big chapter in the company’s history. Thursday morning’s predawn launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in support of Amazon Leo’s satellite constellation was the final flight of an Atlas 5 rocket flying in a 551 configuration.

The rocket carried 29 broadband internet satellites onboard as part of the Atlas 5 Amazon Leo 8 mission, which was also referred to as Leo Atlas 8 (LA-08) by Amazon.

Liftoff from Space Launch Complex 41 happened 12:30:15 a.m. EDT (0430:15 UTC). The rocket flew on a north-easterly trajectory upon leaving the pad.

Is there a launch today? SpaceX, ULA rocket launch schedule in Florida

Florida's Space Coast hosted a record-shattering 109 orbital rocket launches during 2025, soaring beyond all previous annual records.

Though this year's pace is falling short of unprecedented cadence from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and NASA's Kennedy Space Center, 43 rockets still took flight from the Sunshine State through the end of June. For comparison's sake, 31 launches occurred during all of 2021 — which tied Florida's short-lived annual record just five years ago.

The Cape's July launch schedule should feature the usual heavy diet of SpaceX's workhorse Falcon 9 rockets. Blue Origin's massive New Glenn rocket explosion knocked that company's launches off the Eastern Range manifest for the foreseeable future, but space fans are looking ahead to August when a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket will launch NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.
